Voluntary Interindustry
Commerce Standard (VICS EDI)

VICS EDI is the Voluntary Interindustry Commerce Standard which is used by the general merchandise retail industry.  It is a subset of the ANSI ASC X12 national standard.

VICS EDI is being utilized by thousands of companies – department and specialty retail stores, mass merchandisers and their suppliers.

History and Background

The VICS EDI Retail Users Group was initially formed in late 1986, when 18 companies began development of a common interpretation of the ANSI ASC X12 Purchase Order.  By October, 1987, 46 companies representing retailers and suppliers of the retail industry were involved in this development effort.

The electronic format for the Purchase Order was published in April, 1987 and in November, 1987 the Conventions and Implementation Guidelines for VICS EDI were expanded to include several more transaction sets.

In January, 1988, GS1 US became the management and administrative body for VICS EDI.

Implementation Guidelines

The VICS EDI implementation guidelines contain transaction sets which support the following business functions:

  • Product Development/Merchandising
  • Ordering
  • Logistics
  • Financial
  • Business Support
  • Import

For copies of the guidelines and standards go to the Solutions Center or the GS1 US Product Catalog.
