My company needs to bar code products. What do I need to do?

You can complete an application for the GS1 US Partner Connections membership program, which provides you with supply chain benefits and a unique GS1 Company Prefix that allows you to build U.P.C bar codes and more.

How much is the membership fee?

The fee is determined by the number of unique products you need to identify and your company's gross sales revenue. We suggest you complete the membership application to obtain your company's membership fee. You then have the choice to continue with payment at that time or use your user ID and password to continue at a later date.

How long does it take to process my application?

Once we have received the completed application and the appropriate fee, the normal processing time is three to five business days. You will then receive a GS1 US Partner Connections Member Kit that will include a variety of valuable resources, including your licensed GS1 Company Prefix.

How do I obtain bar codes (U.P.C's) to place on my products?

Once you receive the licensed GS1 Company Prefix, you are able to assign your Item Reference Numbers with resources provided in the Partner Connections Member Kit. You can then have the bar codes produced by a printer that has bar coding software or print bar codes yourself. A listing of Solution Providers can be obtained at:

How do I assign my bar code numbers (Item Reference Numbers)?

Using your licensed GS1 Company Prefix, each product is defined by a unique set of numbers, referred to as the Item Reference Number. For instructions, please refer to:

Do I need to register my products with GS1 US?

No, the Item Reference Numbers that you or your manufacturers assign are maintained within your company. They are not registered with GS1 US. You will need to communicate this information to your trading partners only.
